The Stone monolith that today stands in Saint Peter\u2019s Square in Rome, was carved in Egypt 4000 years ago.\u00a0 In the year 37 AD, the emperor Caligula ordered that it be moved to Rome.\u00a0 This was a truly ambitious engineering challenge at the time, as well as proof of the Roman Empire\u2019s power.
\nAlmost 1,150 years later, due to natural historical developments, it was necessary to move it to its present location.\u00a0 Although only a few hundred meters distant, this too necessitated incredible effort and ingenuity and was almost an impossible task given the technology and resources available in Rome in 1586.<\/p>\n

Domenico Fontana, the chief engineer, spent months planning the operation.\u00a0 He experimented with mechanisms of all kinds; pulleys, ropes, levers, as well as tools he himself designed. He calculated that 75 animals and 750 people would be needed to get the job done.\u00a0 The Aswan marble monolith weighed over 350 tons and could fracture during transport, as well as destroy anything it might encounter in its path.<\/p>\n

The risks were so great that \u2013under penalty of death\u2013 speaking was forbidden to both the workers and the onlookers during the undertaking. The strain was so great that, at one point, the hemp ropes began smoking \u2013the friction was such that they began to burn.\u00a0 Nobody dared to sound the alarm because in doing so they would be risking their own heads.<\/p>\n

Just one man -a seaman- understood what was happening, and knew how to resolve the problem.\u00a0 If water were applied to the hemp, it would contract, be strengthened, and return to its normal temperature; thus allowing for the completion of the project.\u00a0 And so the seaman urgently yelled out:<\/p>\n

\u201cThrow water onto the ropes!<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0 —\u201cAqua alle funi!\u201d<\/em> –.<\/p>\n

Captain Giovanni Bresca not only did not lose his life, but also saved the lives of many others, and received numerous awards (reference 1).<\/p>\n

Nowadays, media are experiencing a similar situation, not only in Spain, but also in a large part of the so-called Western World.<\/p>\n

Last week, newscasts and newspapers loudly proclaimed that, during 2010, \u201cmore Spanish films than ever\u201d (!) had been projected in Spanish cinemas.\u00a0 Nevertheless, this week we were further informed that during that same year there had been 9% fewer spectators visiting movie theaters in Madrid (reference 2).<\/p>\n

MacLuhan believed that \u201cthe medium is the message\u201d, because the heady development of the technology by which content is transmitted, dazzles and attracts us in and of itself \u2013like a volcano in full eruption.\u00a0 However, the frenetic technological developmental race is coming to an end; in addition, it has proven to be extraordinarily costly to both the media and society \u2013very much like a volcano’s eruption, too.<\/p>\n

The content which the powers that be allow us to transmit is ever more removed from what our societies would naturally and spontaneously consume:\u00a0 The \u201cropes\u201d are burning; and it appears that few in the media -traditional, electronic or digital- are prepared to take the risks involved in yelling out \u201cThrow water onto the ropes!\u201d\u00a0 The majority are afraid to speak out and draw attention to the fact that something is going terribly wrong.<\/p>\n

This is the concern which incited the birth of this internet site.\u00a0 Here, those in media may speak out regarding this ever-worsening situation; and\u00a0 may share stories, information and experiences which might help save their professions. In the “For media people” section, we have gathered those of our articles that may prove more useful to them.<\/p>\n

As we already said on another occasion:\u00a0 Each nation needs media; but\u00a0 media, without their people, cannot survive\u2026<\/p>\n

Communications media ARE in a terrible financial state; and not only in Spain, but in the better part of the Western world as well.<\/p>\n

Last week news-programs loudly celebrated the fact that in 2010 \u201cmore Spanish films than ever before\u201d had been shown (\u2026!) in Spanish movie theaters; but this week only a few mentioned the fact that Madrid’s movie theaters had 9% fewer patrons than last year… (Report on the Economic and Social Conditions of Madrid’s Residents, apud \u201cQu\u00e9\u201d (daily newspaper), October 13, 2011, p. 4).<\/p>\n

MacLuhan believed that \u201cthe media is the message\u201d, because the dizzying developments in the technology we use to transmit media contents, dazzle and appeal to us in-and-of themselves \u2013it calls out for attention like a volcanic eruption would. That said, the frenentic technological race is coming to an end \u2013in addition to proving to be extraordinarily costly, both for the media as well as for society. …And the contents that those in power allow us to transmit, are further and further removed from what their respective societies would naturally and spontaneously choose to consume, if allowed to.<\/p>\n

The \u201cropes\u201d are on fire; and it would appear that few in the world of Communications media \u2013traditional, electronic or digital\u2013, are prepared to risk it all, shouting \u201cwater for the ropes!\u201d. The majority are terrified of speaking out, and of admitting that something is terribly wrong. And therefore they are losing trustworthiness, influence, audience, and money.<\/p>\n
