\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anonymous messages\u2026<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2013<\/em>most of us distrust them.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>When we talk about letters, we are suspicious of those that reach us without a signature and a return-address.\u00a0 When we talk about general information, we tend to distrust rumours, because we don\u2019t know who started them and what they are expecting to obtain through them.\u00a0 And anonymity constitutes, as well, the main difference between a pamphlet and a legally distributed magazine \u2013magazines are required by law to include information about who publishes them, and where these persons can be located, so that both you and the authorities can reach them if necessary.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This proves particularly important when you talk about electronic media, because of their massive and indiscriminate reach.\u00a0 In regards to traditional electronic media \u2013like TV,\u00a0 it is not unusual to know who their owners are supposed to be, where they are broadcasting from, and where their main offices are located.\u00a0 Knowing these allows us to imagine what we can expect from them, to analyse what they say more accurately, and to complain or congratulate them when the need arises.\u00a0 I certainly do.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is exactly what bothers me so much about Channel 40 [Mexican open TV channel, that started to operate in 1995, when this article was first published]: \u00a0We have no idea about who is transmitting it, why, and from where.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Somebody must benefit from its operation, as such an expensive enterprise cannot be launched without huge investments \u2013particularly as it is being aired practically without any paid advertising<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Whatever the reason, its purpose must relate somehow to its “content agenda” \u2013to the particular selection of news they are publishing.\u00a0 But if we don\u2019t know who is supporting them, it becomes harder to realize both who they are and who they serve; and to weigh their ideological orientation up. If they hide this information from us, how can we analyze their messages properly?<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They say the signal is being cast from Miami; and so it may be.\u00a0 But they are certainly targeting us, because they have launched a national advertising campaign in our country.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One of their spots claims they only transmit \u201ctruth shots\u201d \u2013shots of truth<\/em>.\u00a0 Another one sentences: \u201cWe are what we see\u201d; a third one promises to only deliver \u201creality on television\u201d for us.\u00a0 But neither include the name, address and telephone number or their editor-in-chief (or whoever is responsible for their editorial policies), or the name of the persons and institutions that are covering their rocketing operating costs.\u00a0 If someone knows who they are, I will appreciate to be told, and to communicate with them:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They are omitting news that should be covered by somebody who boasts about their independence and credibility.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Before we learn who is behind them, we won\u2019t be able to trust what they say. And not because of their recent creation or low profile; but because it is mere common sense not to trust whomever throws a stone, only to hide his\/her hand afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anonymous sources\u2026<\/strong> There is something untasty about most of them.<\/p>\n

Around 1995-6, a new television company started to broadcast its signal to the Mexican audience. Some said it was being transmitted from Miami, but no-one truly knew where the signal was being aired from. Its programming was attractive, and was largely composed by reality based contents \u2013mainly newscasts and documentaries. Its advertising campaign promised to deliver only truth to a country who hungered for it. Despite this, its news programs did not even mention the humongous national demonstration (with simultaneous massive local marches in all main cities), that repudiated the agreements signed by the Mexican delegation at a world population conference. Incongruities like this one happen all the time and in every media \u2013internet included; and the expert reader uses them to filter the information he\/she receives in order to discover truth \u2013that is: the true image of reality, despite the many political, ideological and economic agendas which currently shape media contents.
\nIn the time elapsed since this happened, that television channel went bankrupt, was taken over and changed its programming, …but never recuperated the audience it had initially attracted and lost.
